In this day and age a lot of us work from home and we all need a space where we can put our head down and focus. So where do we start when it comes to our home office decor? Here are 5 things to help you make the office of your dreams: your Inspiration, Furniture, Color, Lighting and Decorations.
1. Look for inspiration
Depending on what your situation is - whether you actually have a room for your office, or you have a dedicated work space somewhere in your home, there are plenty of examples out there that can help you define exactly what you are looking for. A great place to find examples is Pinterest. Look at colors, furniture and styles you like then come up with a list or a mood board of things you would want in your space to create the right atmosphere.
2. Furniture
To get your work done efficiently, you want to be comfortable but not too comfortable. So, your bed or your couch are probably not the best place to do work (though I am guilty of this from time to time). A good desk and an office chair with the right support would be the best option for you. Depending on how much space you have, floating shelves, bookcases and cabinets are great storage options you could utilize. If you do not have a lot of space to work with there are desks that have shelving or cabinets attached which you could consider.
Another thing you can do is coordinate the colors and styles of your furniture. This helps to keep the room stylish and organized which should put you in the right frame of mind to focus. If you have some extra space, you could add a nice arm chair or sofa for your breaks.
3. Color
Choosing your color palette of your home office can be exciting, but take your time in choosing it. Blues and greens stimulate thought and are balancing colors that assist in concentration and communication while reds, oranges and yellows are stimulating but can be overwhelming in large amounts. Black brings across the feeling of seriousness and sophistication while white gives heightened perception. As mentioned before, furniture pieces look best when their colors coordinate, but it is also fun to have that one piece of furniture that stands out.
One option for your walls is to use a solid color all around. Another option is to have an accent wall or two e.g. having white walls throughout the room with one wall of a different color. Simplicity of the color scheme for a home office is ideal so the colors complement each other and they do not overwhelm you.
4. Lighting
Lighting is something that can help you infuse a little class and character into your office. There is a whole array of table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling light fixtures you could consider to get that level of sophistication you are looking for, just make sure the lights are not too strong. What you want is to keep your lighting pleasant and soft. Lamp shades soften harsh lights and floor lamps are known to scatter and bounce light off walls and ceilings. The goal is to effortlessly illuminate the room without the light being blinding, and also, to not cast strong shadows either. Another tip is to position your desk by a window so you can capture the natural light. Natural light can improve your mood and morale and can help reduce stress.
5. Decorations
There are so many things you can do to decorate your home office. Here are a few ideas:
Add greenery
Not only do plants look amazing in any room and add a natural feel to it, they also clean the air of a room too! It is said that introducing plants to your home office can improve your mood and increase your happiness – imagine that! And if looking after real plants scares you, there is always the option of having faux plants.
Match up your rug and curtains
Whether or not you have muted or strong colored walls, you can introduce other colors into the room by coordinating your rug and curtains and then adding little accents of that same color on different surfaces.
Pictures, Quotes and Paintings that Motivate You
Adding artwork and pictures you love to your home office can bring little pops of color to it. Studies have shown that artwork makes you feel happier, peaceful and more creative, no matter what kind or art it is: photographs, large abstract painting of sculptures.
Decorative Objects and Accessories
It’s always fun to pick out decorative objects and accessories. You can really bring out your personality and style through them in your office as they can be representations of what you love. From figurines to vases and desk accessories, the options are limitless.
Of course, all of these are suggestions, so make your home office a comfortable and beautiful workspace you look forward to work in. After all, you are probably going to spend many hours in it, why not make it amazing?
