Almost all of us spend time every day in our kitchen and sometimes the thought of spending hours in there gets us down, but with a little bit of sprucing up it could end up being one of our favorite rooms in our homes! Here are a couple of things to consider when you're thinking of updating your kitchen decor:
Lighting
The lighting in a kitchen is something you could play around with. For myself, I prefer to have light fixtures that contrast against the backsplash/background, and so, a default option would be to have some with a black shade. In today’s trends, a pendant Light fixture like the one below (Vampsky Cone Chandelier) is quite popular.
Largish black, coned lights make a bold, simple and modern statement and are quite stylish!
After all, black in usually represents 'high quality'. But it doesn’t mean you just have to be limited to that. There are other stylish and chic lamps you could use in your kitchen. Look at your theme and style and find some you think would go with it.
In addtition, you could have is a small table lamp to go on your countertop. If you find one that matches up with the other accessories in your kitchen that will be a plus!
Artwork
Having artwork in your kitchen will take your kitchen to a new level. Whether it is sentimental like a photograph or a painting that makes you feel relaxed, artwork placed on a counter or on a wall would be a great focal point for the room. Another tip is to find a piece of artwork that has similar colors to the room next to the kitchen, then place it on the wall by the entrance way, and it will help with the transition into the next room.
Calendars
If you have a narrow wall space and you just can’t find the right piece of artwork or frame to position there, a calendar may be your answer. A small one could also sit on your counter if you have the space for it.
Faucets
A kitchen sink faucet is something we don’t always consider as decorative, but it too can be a statement piece. I prefer to have one that contrasts against it’s backsplash or the countertop and one idea is to match its metal with the other metals in your kitchen such as your fridge, stove etc., but it could also stand out on its own in a totally different color. If you are going for a modern touch, I would recommend this highly rated Moen Motionsense faucet which is fingerprint resistant and water spot resistant that ends up giving your kitchen a cleaner look. It also comes in different colors.
Soap Dispensers
Soap dispensers are handy, especially by the kitchen and the bathroom sinks. You can choose one that matches your accent colors in your kitchen, or just find one you like. I personally love marble and glass soap dispensers and here are two of my favorites:
If you would like to, you could add a little, soap disperser tray holder to your sink area - especially if you have wooden counters - in order to protect your surfaces. (Decorations>Decorative Objects & Accents>Signs, Boards & Trays)
Utensils, Utensil Holders, Decorative Bowls and Plants and All the Other Good Stuff
There are so many things you can use to decorate your countertops. Instead of keeping your cooking utensils in your drawers, keep them out and put them into a utensil holder. After all, it’s easier to grab them when you’re busy bustling up a family meal. Wooden items, like some utensils, tend to complement more than clash with any style of kitchen decor, and brings a warmth to the room, so don’t be afraid to try them out.
Decorative bowls and accessories such as olive oil and vinegar bottles are great accent pieces and can add some visual interest to a countertop. Placing fresh fruit and vegetables in decorative bowls can also add a pop of color and freshness to your kitchen too!
Plants, whether they are faux or real add a natural beauty to any room. There are so many ways you can arrange them in your kitchen. You could have small potted plants on your countertops and window sills, you could have some that dangle down across your window, you could have some larger ones sitting in the corners of your kitchen floor and you could also have a couple placed on shelves. Plants are beautiful and visually interesting because they break the monotonous backsplash of kitchen walls and surfaces.
Adding vintage touches to your kitchen will give it a lived-in look and looks great as well. It doesn’t really matter what they are: cutting boards, utensil holders, rolling pins, vases, paintings, or even antique items, you name it! They will add some character to your kitchen.
Cutting Boards
Cutting boards are one way to bring a little natural wood warmth into your kitchen. Stacking similar or different colored boards up against your wall can be visually pleasing, and if you only have one, it would still make a great backdrop for jugs, pots or decorative bowls that you may put in front of it. You could use them as wall decor too! Especially if you’ve simply run out of space and you need somewhere to put them.
Luckily, they don’t just come in basic shapes like a circle or a rectangle, but come in all shapes and sizes. One other way to display them is to use them as a base or a tray for things such as vases and bowls on your kitchen island or counter.
Barstools
If you have a kitchen island or an extending counter, you may probably like to have some barstools. Barstools not only give you extra seating in your kitchen, but they can also be statement pieces too. This is especially true with barstools that have backs of woven leather or wicker detail to them, or any others that look great from the back which would be noticeable when you enter the room. This will definitely take your kitchen up a notch, add texture and make it feel more high-end. They will also stand out more in your kitchen if they contrast with your counter.
Runner Rugs
Runners are great for your kitchen, especially non-slip ones around your sink and counters. Safety first! One tip would be to get one that matches something else in your kitchen. That way, the kitchen will look like it was put together well and was intentionally decorated.
I hope you find this helpful and if you have other tips you would like to contribute, feel free to leave them in the comments! Remember, these are just suggestions. Make your kitchen what you would like it to be :).
